Re "Celebrating black military heroes, in art" by V. Chapman-Smith--
As a Philadelphian for 50 years, I’m ashamed to admit that I had
never made the connection between the Union League and the Civil War!
That conflict so rattled the racial issues that led to a very
destructive war that it has taken more than a century for us to duly
honor the black soldiers for their sacrifices.
As a resident of Germany for a decade, I’ve found an analogous
reluctance of the locals to think logically about Nazism and its belated
effects on the natives.
